Soundpeats Air5 Pro

Soundpeats Air5 Pro

The Soundpeats Air5 Pro comes in a well packaged and stylish box, showing off some of its features directly on the front. On the back we find some more specs such as Bluetooth version 5.4. A frequency response of 20Hz to 40kHz, which should give quite nice bass and all the necessary treble you might wish for. Play time should be up to 7.5 hours and with a fully charged "charging case" - that comes with the airbuds - you could get a total of 37 hours of play time.

The pair we got today is the black version, but they are also available in stylish white - with the exact same features and specs of course.

Unboxing the earbuds first reveals the charging case, in which you find the actual earbuds. The charging case is a smooth rounded product with an RGB colored LED that shows charging and usage status.

Furthermore we find a user guide, an USB-C charging cable and some extra ear tips. All in all you get three pairs of ear tips with sizes small, medium and large. Nothing special about the ear tips, so you can purchase these separately on your favourite online store, local shops or even use existing ones you already have at home which is perfect - no need to purchase proprietary items.

Finally we find a sheet of stickers and a flyer for the PeatsAudio app that is available on both Google Play and App Store, which can be used to further finetune the ear buds to your liking.

The earbuds themselves are quite standard, they are a "copy" of most other wireless ear buds, but they are still stylish and very comfortable. Certainly better looking in my opinion compared to the offerings from the fruit-based company.

Testing
They are quite easy to handle, they fit nicely into my ears and I believe they should fit most ears around the world thanks to the different size ear tips that are available both from SoundPeats, but also around the Internet.

The earbuds feature touch controls on both ear pieces with different functions, fully customizable! Click, Double Click and Triple Click on both the left and right ear piece is customizable with volume up/down, play/pause and so more. You can even set the functions to "undefined" if you don't want a specific tapping sequence to do anything. Comparing this to my daily drivers WH-1000XM4 from Sony and their software, which surely works but do offer less features in some way compared to PeatsAudio. So this is certainly a huge plus for Soundpeats Air5 Pro!

Another thing I think is amazing that Sony just can't figure out, is the ability to change the prompt tone volume. It can be extremely high on the WH-1000XM4, completely separate from the audio volume. Out of the box the Air5 Pro has a rather soft and pleasing volume level which was amazing for my ears. The audio prompt may very well be AI generated for the Air5 Pro, but it feels more natural - also compared to the WH-1000XM4.

The ear buds also feature noise cancelling which I thought would be very interesting to test and it works exceptionally well, most probably thanks to the built in 6 microphones that measures what comes in, what goes out and together with the Qualcomm QCC3091 chip, compares and eliminates sound in a very good way. However, the noise floor is a bit higher than on the Sony WH-1000XM4 which surprised me. It is not annoying and while listening to music or in a phone call, you can't notice the noise floor. The noise floor also differs between the different modes noise cancelling modes; Adaptive Noise Cancellation, Indoor Noise Cancellation, Outdoor Noise Cancellation and Traffic Mode.

I feel that the Outdoor Noise Cancellation works the best for my ears and liking, you might feel different when using the ear buds.

The different noise cancellation modes as well as many other features are easy to control via the app, no delays and the settings update directly. I also love that you can see battery level separately for each ear bud, but also the charging case.

Another feature is the equalizer function where you can choose either premade presets or make your own, which is a must for any headphones.

You can also call the ear buds through the app if you can't find them and they will hopefully be found, if you are within the Bluetooth range.

Overall, I really like the app - it looks great and more importantly, it works.

These ear buds also feature dual device connection, which I've come to love since I started using the WH-1000XM4 from Sony and I can't imagine going back to single device headphones. This feature works really well when connected to for example a computer, watching videos or listening to music and then also as a second device your phone. When a call comes in, it switches over to the phone.

One thing I don't like here, that I believe could be fixed with a firmware update is putting the video/audio on pause on the first device when a call comes in on your phone.

Other than that, the audio quality in phone calls both for me as a user of the ear buds but also the outgoing audio via the mic to the other party on a phone call is very nice. A bit "flat", but the quality is very good and easily heard in any environment with or without noise around you.

The audio quality when listening to music or watching videos was at first a bit low and sure, you certainly shouldn't pump up the volume to max when using ear buds like this - or even any headphones at all - as it can severely damage your hearing. But as I've used and tested so many headphones the last 20 years, I know my limits but also - I just have to pump it up to the max to test it out. At first the volume was very much.. meh.. which had me a bit disappointed. However, I did a "Fit Test" in the app and managed all the volumes correctly both on the devices but also the ear buds and I unlocked the full potential of the ear buds.

The Air5 Pro supports aptX which ensured improved audio fidelity and low latency paired with compatible devices.

Sure these are small headphones, ear buds, but the power is amazing. Paired with my own equalizer settings, I could get some rather awesome audio profile. Ok, for an audiophile these are probably not worth the money - but then again, there are hardly any ear buds or headphones that are accepted by audiophiles. So, removing them from the equation, the audio quality will range from very good to amazing for all other users with the Air5 Pro ear buds.

Air5 Pro feels very lightweight and they certainly give a nice balance of comfort, performance and affordability. The charging case is not too big, larger than some other brands, but certainly not the largest out there. It will fit well in a pocket or easily found in a bag. The black color might make it a bit harder to find in a bag, but the feeling and touch of the outside of the charging case should make it easy to find when reaching into your bag.

I've never actually used wireless ear buds previously, but I loved my wired ear buds that I used for 10+ years previously before the WH-1000XM4. They had a similar design with the same ear tips, they didn't have noise cancelling but with the Air5 Pro it had noise lowering capabilities in common. So even if you don't use noise cancelling, you do get a significant amount of separation from the world around you thanks to the ear tips. So with that I had some expectations that the ear buds should fit quite well, but being wireless I thought that if I shook my head violently or did some running - which I hardly know how to do - they would fall out. This was not the case, they fit very well in my ears and I had no falling out problems.

Touching just on the audio modes, noise cancellation which in this case is ANC - active noise cancellation - gives great noise reduction, with a slight noticable noise floor. Transparent mode uses the microphones to amplify and give you direct access to sounds around you, this worked very well and you can clearly hear other people talking around you. Normal mode is without ANC and without Transparent features, its just like plugging old regular ear buds that only gives you audio.

Battery life has been overall quite good. It always depends on the volume and how much you use the ear buds - higher volume, more bass; less battery time. This is true for all wireless battery powered audio products. Charging the ear buds has been quite quick in the charging case, when I let the battery run out on purpose on the ear buds they continue to work with just a single one - well until that ear bud also runs out of power. Putting the ear buds into the charging case for 10 minutes gives enough play time to last while you watch quite a few more videos without any problem.

Soundpeats also has a FAQ on their website for common problems and questions which are great. They also have full support for pre and post sales, so if you need help you should certainly get it.

Finally the price for the Soundpeats Air5 Pro is around USD $79.99 which I feel is very good price for the features and quality of sound of the ear buds.

Would I buy these again after my tests? I can't say no, it is impossible. Surely there are better ones out there, I haven't found any yet for this price point however - but rest assured, there are a lot of worse sounding ear buds out there. The Soundpeats Air5 Pro is a recommended purchase for anyone looking for good quality ear buds that fit most ears around the world, with excellent audio quality - ANC, dual device connection and customizability.

You can't go wrong with these ear buds!
