Sandisk Extreme SSD 120GB

Christopher Fredriksson

On our testbench today we have the Extreme SSD featuring 120GB from Sandisk. It's time to check out how this little device will perform with some of our favourite benchmarks.

As this is our first SSD test we don't really have anything to compare with, therefore we will only compare the results with what Sandisk has measured in their labs.

It all seems to be in order with values close to what Sandisk has measured in their labs. The general feel using the drive both as an addon drive and as a system drive is far better than with a SATA disk drive running at 7200rpm.

Boot-up, program loading
As said above, the general feel with the drive is superb compared to a normal disk drive. The boot-up was measured and compared to a SATA disk drive running at 7200rpm. Both connected to a 6GB/s interface on our test motherboard.

The boot-up time for the regular disk drive was measured to 32 seconds from power-on to idle on desktop. The same procedure was done with the Sandisk Extreme SSD and we got a stunning 12 second record time, a fully 20 seconds faster boot-up time.

For the tests we used Windows 7, a fresh install without any additional software installed. The rest of the setup consisted of the following hardware.

  • Intel Core i7 990X, 6 Cores @ 3.47GHz 12MB
  • Intel DX58SO
  • GeForce 8800 GTX
  • 8 GB Kingston KHX1600C9D3K2/8GX
  • Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit

Overall, the Extreme SSD from Sandisk with 120GB of storage space is surely a recommended product. With a price tag below €100 EURO, landing around €99 EURO, this drive is far from expensive. We're seeing lower prices day after day and with a price of less than one Euro per gigabyte, we're definitely coming closer to throwing out those old disk drives.

With the performance of the Extreme SSD from Sandisk, it surely is a recommended buy for your upgraded rig!

We would like to thank Sandisk for providing the review sample.
